ABOUT MR. YOUNG
Bio and Resume
Greetings! We are looking forward to a great year, and I am very excited to be working and learning with your second grader. Following is important information to secure a smooth start to the school year.
Arrival Time
I will be picking up the class at 7:45 am to go to their locker and prepare for the day. Students are considered tardy at 8:00am.
Change in Transportation
Please inform the office before 2:15 P.M.
Picking Up During the School Day
If you need to pick up your child during the school day, stop in the office and they will call the classroom to dismiss your child.
Communication
Please feel free to contact me anytime. There will also be a “Tuesday Folder” sent home that contains important notices from the school, PTA handouts, or things happening in our class. The newsletter will be sent via email, so please let me know if you require a hard copy.
Materials and Backpacks
Backpacks should be brought to school every day. It is your child’s responsibility to bring all binders, notebooks, or library books back to school each day. Your child’s schoolwork will be sent home throughout the week, in a “Take Home Folder”.
FERPA
The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)* is a legislation to protect the records of your students. However, this also protects any likeness including photos or videos from being published on this web site. If you have indicated you do not want records released to anyone (FERPA form in back to school packet), but would still like your student to have an opportunity for their writing or photo to appear on our class web site, make sure you contact me, and we will take the necessary steps to include your student.
Please feel free to call or e-mail with any questions about this. You can download the form exemption form here.
Medicine
All medicine must be in the original container and must be accompanied by a note or a doctor’s prescription. Please take the medicine to the nurse’s office where it will be kept and administered. Please write a note letting me know.
Breakfast and Lunch
Both breakfast and lunch are served at school. Please pre-pay in the cafeteria. We will let you know when your child is running low on the “ticket” so you can send in additional funds. You can also request a computer printout to see what your child has purchased.
Clothing
Remember that elementary school is a time for working with and exploring new things. Your child may get dirty. Tennis shoes are best because we have recess every day. Tennis shoes must be worn on PE days.
Visitors
Parents are always welcome in our school and classroom. We welcome and need your support in a variety of ways. All visitors and volunteers must check in at the office and receive a visitor’s badge before coming to the classroom. Before volunteering in the classroom or chaperoning a field trip, you must sign up through the McKinney ISD website and have your background check completed yearly.
Conferences
I will be meeting with each of you during the first nine weeks. You are always welcome to schedule a conference with me if there are ever any concerns. My conference time is from 8:40-9:30 AM. Email is also an acceptable way to communicate, and I keep up with correspondences daily (unless I am on some awesome vacation). Finally, thebestclass.org is equipped with a password protected live chat--email to schedule a time.
Birthdays
According to new district policy, birthdays will no longer be celebrated with food. We will definitely be honoring your child in various ways on their birthday, and I encourage you to creatively honor them in class as well. Some suggestions are classroom sets of pencils, bookmarks, books, running out of ideas, but rest assured, your child will still have an awesome school birthday. We also celebrate half birthdays for summer kids.
Snacks
As a second grader, you will have the option of bringing your own snack from home each day. Snack will not be provided for each student. Please bring a healthy snack. No drinks are allowed in the classroom except bottled water. Snacks will not be stored in classrooms for days at a time.
Discipline
We use the 1-4 system.
4 - An incredible day--shockingly amazing.
3 - Met the expectations in every way.
2- Minor issues.
1- Rut row--expect the dreaded phone call.
Your child's clip will begin the day on a 3. If they maintain good behavior, they will stay on that 3. However, I like students to be rewarded for extraordinary days, in which case they proudly move up to a 4. Students always have an opportunity to move up (or down). These numbers will be recorded in their take-home folder for your viewing pleasure.
